About the Band

Contest Performances

Our current musical director, Duncan Beckley, joined us in 2010. At that time the band was competing in the third section and struggling for players.

We won our first regional competition under Duncan in March 2011, qualifying us for the national finals where we finished in second place.

In 2015 we again qualified for the 3rd section national finals, earning us promotion to the second section. Our competition perfomances since then have been remarkably consistent, as we have progressed through the divisions.

This has included two memorable wins at Bolsover Entertainment Contest, along with three test-piece competition wins at NEMBBA and Leicester contests.

By 2019 our consistent performances had qualified us for promotion to the first section for the first time in the band's history. This culminated in 2023 when the band placed in 2nd and won the right to compete at the very top level, the Championship Section.

Local Engagements

The band was formed in 1866 as a local village band, and the majority of our commitments are still within our local community.

One of our most important duties is to lead the annual parade through Horbury on Remembrance Sunday and perform hymns at the cenotaph.

The most memorable opportunity we've had in the last few years has been our run of Brassed Off at Wakefield Theatre. We were engaged by the Wakefield Little Theatre group to perform as "Grimley Colliery Band", which involved acting as well as playing music! It was an amazing experience to be part of and it was extremely well received.

As well as performing full concerts we have a "Lite Band" formation, which is a ten piece group that plays summer galas and smaller events.

We've had some excellent concerts in the last few years and we're hoping to plan even more. Keep an eye on our Events page so that you don't miss out!

If you would like to discuss hiring us, please contact our band secretary.
