Horbury at Yorkshire Regionals
- Hits: 1991
With their success of last year, 2nd Regionals, 5th National Finals, Horbury found themselves promoted to 2nd section this year, always a tricky situation for a band, playing against tougher competition!
However Duncan Beckley their MD always believed they would do well in the Regional Championships, and rehearsed them accordingly.
Unfortunately, less than 48hrs before they were due to play, Duncan was urgently admitted to Hospital. He still worked with the Band, and arranged for Phil Goodwin from Black Dyke Band to conduct in his place.
Although their preparation time was short, and drawn to play first, Phil led Horbury through an excellent performance of ‘The Mermaid of Zennor’ gaining third place in the competition! Phil wasn’t able to enjoy the success though as by the time the results came out he was in his more familiar position rehearsing with Black Dyke band for their appearance in the Yorkshire Championship section, contributing their winning performance of ‘Cambridge Variations’ the following day.
Both Horbury and Newstead Bands would like to thank Phil for his tremendous help. It’s not a position we would have wanted to be in but Phil’s approach kept the bands calm and focussed to concentrate on their performances. Obviously Duncan was very disappointed that he had to stand down but both bands recognise the immense work that Duncan puts in to their organisations shown by his continuing involvement and planning even when he can’t get to rehearsal.

Thanks to the good auspices of Lisa Welch and the Horbury Productions team, the Band played at Horbury Academy on Saturday a varied programme of movie themes including Hymn to the Fallen and a sparkling Diamonds! Their encore, which the audience cheered for, was Happy, which featured in Despicable Me II.

The Band were placed second in the 3rd Section Yorkshire Regional Finals in March giving us the privilege of representing Yorkshire (along with 1st placed Skelmanthorpe) in the National Finals at Cheltenham on the 19th September. We were placed 5th out of 18 Bands - the Band played flawlessly, but not quite the way the adjudicators wanted it!
Such is contesting!
New Learners Wanted Desperately

Music Lessons
The band, as always, are searching for youngsters to join and learn to play a brass instrument. Tom Greatorex, the youth musical director, is desperate for youngsters to come along and be taught to play an instrument.
Instruments are provided along with music and tuition for the astoundingly cheap fee of £4 per week.
The future of the band, which celebrates its 150 years anniversary in 2016, rests with the young so come along and help start another 150 years.
